3. German Influence on Danish Education 915 3. Gorman Influence on Danish Education was on its highest in the years 1780-1810. Yet it must be remem- bered that at the time of the reformation Danmark nearly from the first moment was Standing by the gide of the Northern Germany, and 1 mean that we can follow the influence of Lutber's »Schrift an die Ratgherren« S0 late as to Lex Christiani V, 1683. In the sixteenth and gSeventeenth century the Danigh commercial fleet maintained a cloge connection with England, Holland, France and other countries and the young Danigh gentlemen vigited these countries bringing back not only books but also manners and intellectual interests. About 1720 was Danmark in matters concerning School - organigation ahead of Germany but our catechetical art thence was renewed from this land and the pietist - movement as a whole had a great power also here. August Hermann Prancke was a well known man among our g8choolmagters. It Should be remembered also that not all danish citizens were Danes but a great part of them were Germans; these citizens kept -- quite undisturbed by the danigh government -- a narrow connection with Germany and it was not Seldom that German authors got economic Support from the danigh monarcbs. Our pedagogical authors in the first half of the Seventeenth century Such as HMilsehow, Prahl, Fr. Horn were under influence from Kngland and France; our literature concerning education of women was of French origin Just as our literature concerning education by tutors. The greatest wave of German influence into Danish education is due to the Philanthropmum and to the circle of famous men in connection with it or living at that time. The best way to Show that is perhaps by naming 80me of our transglations from German, first remarking that Basedow from 1753-1768 had been a danish official (first in Sor and then in Altona) and under otber political cireumstcances he could have had a leading port in the reorganisation of our Schools. Furthermore it ghall be remarked that already in 1775 had one in Danmark highly estimated man Nic. In the nineteenth century has the Danish education had a most Self- relying character.
