Perspectives
Although the Maerlant-project is now finished,'° research on the development and use of
ICT in educational contexts is still one of the main objectives of the Maerlant centre. We
are developing new but similar software that can be used on different levels of secondary
education. A cd-rom on the unity and separation of the Netherlands at the end of the 16
th century and one on the life and works of Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) have been
published recently. '"
To date, the Maerlant centre has, among other things, produced a cd-rom on the Sint-
Baafscathedral in Ghent and one on Our Lady Cathedral in Antwerp, a cd-rom on Mayor
Rockox and Antwerp's Golden Age"? and two websites: Heurodot, for university students
to help them to master historical method in a professional manner; In het atelier van de
historicus (in the historian's workshop), for students in higher education."
Up till now two types of products can be distinguished: strictly educational ones on
the one hand and products for a broad public on the other. In the future we would like
them to come more near to each other. We would like to do this by making cd-roms for a
broad public and by offering covering courses for teachers and pupils via the internet. A
permanent interaction between theory and practice, between products, product develop-
ers and users remains however a necessary condition for all our future activities.
